    While on an amazing 2 weeks drive through the stunning country side of Italy i said to my girlfriend Sal (pictured below drinking Montepulciano) "as soon as i get home to Aussie land I'm going to climb to the top of our winery and sing out how amazing these varietals from the land of pizza and gelato are!

    From the world famous Nebiolo of Piemonte to the Nero Di Avola of Sicily these wines are dropping jaws of those lucky enough to try them.

    But one variety in particular which we drove through crazy traffic and even accidentally down a bike track to get to captured our hearts and tastebuds through and through.

    Now I'm not sure if it was the 13th century castle we stayed (picture below), or the stunning rolling hills lined with vine rows or the fact this variety of which we have a couple acres has impressed us both in the vineyard and the winery since we planted it in 2009.

    Montepulciano. with it's home on the Northern coast of Italy in a region called Abruzzo, loves a warm dry Mediterranean climate and is why it is turning heads in our beautiful home the Barossa Valley.

    With this exclusive single vineyard Montepulciano wine you are getting a rare limited edition wine (only 200 dozen bottles made).

    This extravagant Montepulciano red wine comes with a dramatic story... In its first year, a group of sheep, affectionately named “The Mob”, squeezed through a hole in the vineyard fence. It was a tragedy for the vines, and almost proved to be fatal for this tiny patch of the estate. They ravished the whole plot! But all was not lost. Three years later and the first crop of grapes to be delivered from these tough young vines are second to none. That’s the beauty of growing on ironstone and red clay.                                                                                            
    Deeply coloured, as we all love our Barossa reds to be, the Atze’s take on this Montepulciano wine style is full of dark cherries and blackberries supported by a spine of fine, savoury tannins.  Its richness and juicy-fruit is clearly Barossa but there’s more than a nod, in the savoury, food-friendly style to Italy.

      This is a red which is made to be enjoyed with umami-
      rich foods; think pizza Margherita and mushroom risotto.

      Background/Story:

      Andy has adopted Montepulciano along with a swathe of other Italian varieties, introduced them to his family’s Barossa vineyards and is making the wine with his usual flair. But it was a close run thing with the Montepulciano; a mob of excited sheep nearly grazed the young vines to death. Resurrected, and I suppose, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, the 2016 vintage has produced a cracking wine.
      200 dozen bottles produced.

      Maturation

      16 months 3rd and 4th fill mix of French and American
      Oak Hogsheads to give subtle hints of oak and soften our the chewy raw tannin.

      Vineyard:

      1 Ha single vineyard. Soil: Scattered Iron Stone/Shallow clay loan top soil over deep red clay. Site: East Facing Slope

      Low Yelds of 2 tonne/acre and a dry summer with a warm February and mild March saw average ripening and well developed blue fruit flavours
