2019 VINTAGE - NEW RELEASE
Grenache is a stalwart of the Barossa Valley’s treasure trove of red varieties. A noble and respected variety from the Mediterranean, Grenache thrives in the Barossa’s warm, dry climate. These Old vines are lovingly tended by Andy’s parents John and Barb. Old vines such as these produce few grapes but those they do offer make fabulously concentrated wines. This 2018 vintage is a decade away from its peak, but it already revels in its silky body, fleshy strawberry and cream fruit with generous bouquet of roses and apricots. Drink with hearty winter foods; lambs shanks and mash would be perfect. Don’t forget to cellar some.
Holding off until the right calibre of fruit was ready means Atze’s haven’t released a Grenache since the sell-out 2012.
Hotly anticipated, the 2018 is worth the wait.
One precious acre of Grenache, planted in 1975 near Atze’s Corner, is low yielding and difficult to prune – making the fruits of their labour all the more sweet.
Andy says:
I loved the riper take on the variety and quality of the 2012 vintage, and have been waiting ever since to have another one good enough to put into bottle again.
At the time, John & Barb were considering pulling the vineyard out as the vines were low yielding and a pain in the butt to prune, so I thought if I put their name on the bottle as a single vineyard wine the vines would be safe!
After 14 Months in an 8 year old French oak puncheon, only one barrel was chosen out of 6 to be bottled for this limited release wine.
Bottled on the 8th August 2019, and a decade away from its peak, this wine in its youth revels in its silky body, fleshy strawberry and cream fruit with generous bouquet of roses and apricots.
Drink now to 2035. Be sure to decant it to open it up and let its quality shine.

2018 Vintage
Shiraz often steals the limelight in the Barossa Valley. However, local vignerons know that the careful blending of Shiraz with Mataro and Grenache results in something better than the sum of their parts. At Atze’s Corner, we’ve followed this practice to create an A-label estate wine: our Barossa Valley Estate Grenache Shiraz Mataro.
This GSM wine (Grenache Shiraz Mataro) is vibrantly purple. Its tone betrays the presence of that deeply-coloured, muscular Mataro, which builds on the hues of the Australia Grenache and Shiraz. On the bouquet of this Grenache red wine, you can enjoy the sweet compote notes of blackcurrants and raspberries. It’s a complex, fascinating bouquet which keeps you going back for more.
The palate of this GSM wine is precise and bright, with layered, elegant tannins supporting plush, ripe dark berries and sweet red cherries. The acidity, which is retained in the wine, adds an extra element of freshness and vibrancy which lingers on the palate. The aroma of the wine is characterized by notes of pepper, sage, and herb.
The Makeup of Our GSM
An excellent GSM calls for the perfect harmony among Grenache, Shiraz, and Mataro. At Atze’s Corner, we’ve cracked the code: we use 60 percent Grenache wine with 30 percent Shiraz and 10 percent Mataro. The Grenache wine stays for just eight months in barrels, whereas the other two require a full 12 months to reach maturity.
Our 2016 estate wine is exceptionally flavorful due to the warm and dry summer our vineyard experienced. These weather patterns allowed the fruit develop to the optimal weight and balance to create a superb GSM.
If you’re new to blended wines, our GSM makes for the perfect introduction. It takes the best of three well-loved wines from Barossa and combines them in a way that allows you to appreciate what each has to offer, without any one being overpowering.
Review by Andrew Graham, Australian Wine Review.
There’s a real exuberance to this wine. An energy of Grenache raspberry fruit, the plum Shiraz and licorice Mataro hints, and just a faint bitterness on the finish. Grenache is the star here, and gee it’s a convincing wine. Low acid only enhances the drinkability. Yum. Best drinking: 2017-2028. 18/20, 93/100. 14.5%, $24.95. Would I buy it? Absolutely.

This is a fruit-driven Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016 with all the ripe black fruit flavours we’ve come to expect from the Barossa Valley favourite.
As with all Atze’s wines, this Barossa Shiraz Estate has been made using the traditional artisan approach - destemmed without crushing, delicately moved to the fermenter to keep the grapes intact, hand pumped over and basket pressed to create a pure and expressive Barossa Shiraz Estate wine.
The peppery spice, the vanilla of oak, the dark fruits and liquorice of the aroma flow through to the palate and wrap the rich tannins in a layer of flavour. You’re left with a lingering finish of cacao and the hope that there’s another glass available.
This Barossa Valley Shiraz is not to be missed!
