  • Unveiling "The Giant" Durif: Australia's Hidden Gem

Discover the well-kept secret of Australian wine enthusiasts - "The Giant" Durif, an undiscovered gem awaiting your senses. At Atze's Corner, we cherish the rare and scarce nature of this extraordinary grape variety, making it one of the Barossa Valley's best-kept treasures.

Tasting Note: Brace yourself for a dark and rich wine, crafted by our winemaker with absolute respect for this hardy grape variety. The bouquet delights with notes of barbecue smoke, licorice, and juicily-ripe plums. The palate takes you on a journey of ripe, concentrated black fruits and harmonious spices, beautifully enveloped by savory tannins. "The Giant" Durif is complete and truly harmonious.

Pairing: This wine yearns for robust accompaniments to complement its richness. Indulge in the likes of tender rabbit or a succulent sirloin steak to perfectly balance its opulence.

    Alcohol: 14.5%

Maturation: Aged for 18 months in a blend of 3rd fill French/American oak and 20% new American Oak Hogsheads, this wine achieves a delightful softness while showcasing powerful upfront palate weight.

Single Vineyard: Our prized "The Giant" Durif comes from vines planted in 2005. Hand-pruned in a single cordon spur style, the vines produce high-grade fruit with a yield of 2.5 tonnes per acre.

Sub Regions: Sourced from the esteemed Koonunga subregion, where Brown Clay loam over deep red clay lends its unique influence.

    Elevation: 280 Metres

Cellaring: Indulge in "The Giant" Durif now by decanting a few hours before dining, or allow it to evolve for up to 15 years, revealing even more layers of its captivating character.

      Background/Story:

Durif is one of Australia’s undiscovered gems. People in the know, we suspect, keep quiet about it so as not to arouse too much competition for what is, after all, a scarce bottle of wine. Atze’s Corner is one of the only wineries in the Barossa Valley to have planted Durif and based on this result more should follow. Mind you, Andy Kalleske did plant his Durif on prime vineyard land in
the famous Koonunga sub-region of the Barossa so it is off to a great start. Named “The Giant” in tribute to an overly tall, Barossa settler, the wine fully lives up to that
      description in all respects.

A stunning wine - a real pick-me-up in these disjointed times.

Deep red in colour, full bodied and smooth as silk. Just the wine to go with slow roasted lamb and baked pumpkin wedges, and our adult daughters visiting for the night. An Easter weekend treat, sharing beautiful food and wine with loved ones. Almost made us forget about the imposed social restrictions!
