John and Barb's Old Vine 2021 Grenache

Add to cart

  • 2021 VINTAGE

Grenache is a stalwart of the Barossa Valley’s treasure trove of red varieties.  A noble and respected variety from the Mediterranean, Grenache thrives in the Barossa’s warm, dry climate.  These Old vines are lovingly tended by Andy’s parents John and Barb. Old vines such as these produce few grapes but those they do offer make fabulously concentrated wines. This 2021 vintage is a few years away from its peak, but it already revels in its silky body, fleshy strawberry and cream fruit with generous bouquet of roses and apricots.  Drink with hearty winter foods; lambs shanks and mash would be perfect. Don’t forget to cellar some.

Holding off until the right calibre of fruit was ready means Atze’s have only released a Grenache since the sell-out 2012 four times.

Hotly anticipated, the 2021 is worth the wait.

One precious acre of Grenache, planted in 1975 near Atze’s Corner, is low yielding and difficult to prune – making the fruits of their labour all the more sweet.

    Andy says:

I loved the riper take on the variety and quality of the 2012 vintage, and always wait to have another one good enough to put into bottle again.

At the time, John & Barb were considering pulling the vineyard out as the vines were low yielding and a pain in the butt to prune, so I thought if I put their name on the bottle as a single vineyard wine the vines would be safe!

After 14 Months in an 8 year old French oak puncheon, only one barrel was chosen out of 6 to be bottled for this limited release wine.

Bottled on the 8th October 2023, and a decade away from its peak, this wine in its youth revels in its silky body, fleshy strawberry and cream fruit with generous bouquet of roses and apricots.

Drink now to 2032. Be sure to decant it to open it up and let its quality shine.

      Background/Story:

Old Vine Grenache from a tiny one acre single vineyard near Atze’s Corner in the Barossa Valley, planted by my parents, 5th Generation Barossa Valley grape growers John and Barb Kalleske back in 1975.
An exceptional vintage in 2018 was these low yielding gnarly Old Barossa Valley Grenache vines produce a highly concentrated wine. Hand-picked, fifteen percent whole bunch open small ferment and 16 months in seasoned oak barrels have given this wine alluring red fruit and herbal aromatics, round generous flavours of red currant, ripe raspberries and cherries. Only 50 cases produced.

Fermentation/Maturation 2 barrels selected out of 6 for bottling of this wine.

      Vineyard:

Planted in 1975 by John and Barb Kalleske.

      Vintage:

An amazing ripening season saw excellent "hang time" for the Grenache fruit, resulting in beautiful texture, flavour and length in this Grenache.

Cellaring this one for a few years, but if it is as good as most of the premium wines Atze Corner produce I am sure it will be exceptional.

    great service as usual
