Tasting Note

2021 Eddies Old Vine Shiraz – Barossa Valley

For the quintessential Barossa Valley Shiraz, look no further than the 2021 Eddies Old Vine Shiraz, a wine that embodies the depth and intensity of the region's most cherished vineyards. Crafted from three Old Vine vineyards planted by the Atze family in 1912, 1951, and 1975, this wine pays tribute to the legacy of Eddies Staehr and Eddies Liebig, who planted the oldest vineyard in 1912.

Tasting Notes:
Deep, brooding, and virtually impenetrable, this wine boasts a ruby red hue that signals the power and concentration of low-yielding, old vines. The bouquet is a feast for the senses, led by sweet spices, damson plum, dark chocolate, and the faintest touch of toasty oak. On the palate, dark cherries, Christmas cake, and cloves mingle with cinnamon and anise, creating a complex and luxurious mouthfeel. The finish is exceptionally long, with a savory, umami note that lingers and invites another sip.

Why You'll Love It:

  • Historic Vineyards: Sourced from three of the oldest vineyards in the Barossa, planted in 1912, 1951, and 1975.
  • Complex Flavor Profile: Rich, with layers of dark cherries, Christmas cake, and spices, offering a smooth, lush mouthfeel.
  • Age-Worthy: While the wine is drinking exceptionally well now, it has the potential to age gracefully for 25+ years.
  • Limited Production: This wine reflects the rare beauty and complexity of Barossa's ancient vines.

Cellaring Recommendation:

Even better with age.

I just opened a 2005 & a 2010 Eddies Old Vine. The 2005 was right where the top aged Barossa Shiraz would be, with that complex rich full bodied long luxurious flavor. Perfect with an aged sirloin. The 2010 showed surprising fruit, lots of development, heaps of chocolate, 12 years old, but still a long life left.

The 2019 shows that same quality, but a few years in the cellar will provide benefits. It's fun to drink now, but you'll like it even more later.

Very expensive

It’s a shame that our 1st taste of this wine, which was A1 was spoilt by paying $170.00 at a Melboure restaurant only to find out we could have bought it for $60 a little bitter sweet but the wine is magnifico :wine_glass::wine_glass:

Atze's & Eddies Old Vine 'Brilliance'

Just arrived home in time t receive the delivery of our latest purchases from our Atze's winery visit, especially including our favorite, Eddies Old Vine, a simply brilliant wine and one of our absolute favourites. It was our first time to Atze's in Nuriootpa and we were so pleased to be on-site to see and experience where some of the best Barossa Shiraz's are grown and produced. The hospitality shown by Isabelle, Ryan and Barb was superb and greatly appreciated. We thanks them so much for the opportunity and especially for producing some brilliant wines like Eddies Old Vine which is a superb example of an Old Vine Barossa Shiraz. Anyone who purchases a bottle (or two) will see and taste exactly why we love this wine. Thanks Atze's, a very special winery and wines.

I first tasted Eddie's Old Vine Shiraz at a restaurant in Brisbane. It was outstanding, so I sought out the Cellar Door to purchase a case on my own behalf. I wasn't disappointed. I am by no means a wine connoisseur, but I know when I like one and this sits close to the very top for me. I recently enjoyed a bottle with my father and he agreed too. I also purchased a case of Atze's Bachelor Shiraz at the same time and it too is an easy drinking, enjoyable red. I would be happy to recommend Atze's to anyone.
