2015 The Mob Montepulciano – A Rare, Award-Winning Treasure
This 2015 Montepulciano isn’t just a wine—it’s a story of resilience, excellence, and world-class recognition. From a single vineyard in Barossa Valley, this limited-edition release (only 200 dozen bottles) boasts an exceptional pedigree, earning multiple prestigious awards:
- Best Red Wine – Italian Varietal Wine Awards Trophy
- Most Exciting Wine – Chief Judges Award, Italian Varietal Wine Awards
- Champion Wine – Australian Italian Varieties Wine Awards 2016
- Wine of the Year – 2017 Melbourne International Wine Competition
The Story Behind the Vineyard:
In its first year, disaster struck this small vineyard when a group of sheep, affectionately called “The Mob,” found their way through a hole in the fence. They ravaged the entire plot, leaving the vines nearly destroyed. But these resilient young vines, growing on Barossa’s ironstone and red clay, made a miraculous comeback. Three years later, the first harvest yielded grapes of unparalleled quality.
Tasting Notes:
This deeply colored wine reflects the bold character we love in Barossa reds. It’s bursting with dark cherries and blackberries, balanced by fine, savoury tannins. While unmistakably Barossa in its richness and juicy fruit, its savoury, food-friendly profile nods to the Italian tradition of Montepulciano.
A real crowd-pleaser, this wine is not only a sensory delight but also a testament to the determination of both the vines and the winemakers.

Vineyard and Terroir:
The Mob Montepulciano is sourced from a single hectare vineyard with shallow clay loam topsoil over deep red clay, scattered with ironstone. Nestled on an east-facing slope, the vineyard produces low yields (2.5 tonnes per acre), resulting in concentrated, high-quality fruit.
Maturation:
The wine spent 15 months in a mix of third and fourth-fill French and American oak hogsheads, softening the tannins and adding subtle hints of oak.
Vintage Notes:
The 2015 growing season featured a dry summer, a warm February, and a mild March, which led to early ripening and beautifully developed blue fruit flavors.
