Tasting Note

2020 Forgotten Hero Shiraz – Barossa Valley

The 2020 Forgotten Hero Shiraz is a rare and distinguished wine, sourced from a 1951 vineyard planted by the Atze family. Once forgotten during the 1980s vine pull scheme, this historic vineyard was rescued and nurtured by John and Barb Kalleske in 1983. Now, more than 30 years later, it continues to yield low, concentrated fruit that forms the heart of this classic Barossa Shiraz.

Tasting Notes:
Deeply flavored and full-bodied, this wine displays the complex, rich characteristics that only come from such low-yielding, old vines. With 20 months of maturation in new French oak, the 2019 vintage has developed a powerful and sophisticated profile. Intense flavors of dark fruit are beautifully complemented by a touch of spice and the subtle influence of oak, resulting in a wine that is both elegant and bold. The finish is long and smooth, leaving a lasting impression of ripe, balanced tannins.

Why You'll Love It:

  • Historic Vineyards: From a 1951 vineyard, rescued from the vine pull scheme and nurtured for decades.
  • Full-Bodied and Complex: Rich, concentrated flavors of dark fruit, balanced with oak maturation.
  • Rare & Limited: Less than 70 cases produced per vintage, making this a truly exclusive wine.
  • Cellaring Potential: With its exceptional balance, this wine is built to last, aging gracefully for over 20 years.

Vineyard & Terroir:
The Forgotten Hero Shiraz comes from a single 1951 vineyard, planted in sandy loam over red-brown clay. The rows run north to south, and the vines are single cordon spur-trained, optimizing exposure to the sun and ensuring the quality of the fruit.

Vintage:
The 2020 vintage was dry and warm, resulting in even ripening and excellent balance, with powerful weight and smooth tannins. The wine displays an outstanding color profile, with a deep, intense hue that reflects its exceptional quality.

Magnificent

We just enjoyed, and I mean ENJOYED a bottle of the 2018 Forgotten Hero, which has been resting in my cellar for a few years, waiting for an appreciative group. Today was the day and Oh Boy was it worth the wait! Wonderful nose, smooth in the mouth and delicious taste, - it just slipped down like silk. My only complaint? i was the designated driver, so had to limit myself the a small glass while the others slurped and licked their lips in pleasure! Thankyou Atzes.

Bold

Bold and Big, great lines in the glass and a taste that lingers on the tongue long after the glass is finished. Could not stop at two glasses

Unforgettable Hero!

Atze’s Corner’s Forgotten Hero shiraz is definitely never likely to be forgotten by anyone who has the good fortune to be rescued from mundane existence by this hero of a top Barossa red! It embodies the attributes we like in our heroes - powerful, bold, fruity and complex, but at the same time refined and easy to love - doubtless mirroring the skilful wine maker behind it and thanks to heroic John and Barb, who saved its wonderful parent vineyard decades ago. Trust me, this is a wine to make any special occasion even more memorable for you, or, alternatively IF you can bear to share, you will become the never-to-be-forgotten hero to any guests who savour it!

Magnificent Barossa Shiraz

This wine was one to remember, drinking well now and will only improve with age. I have two in the cellar and finding it very hard to let them age.

Barossa Shiraz at it's Best

Another stunning vintage from Atze's Corner. A deep complex and rich wine that is very drinkable now and I suspect will age quite nicely. This is a small batch wine that you should try if you haven't already and will no doubt buy more if you have already had it.
