This extravagant wine comes with a dramatic story... In its first year, a group of sheep, affectionately named “The Mob”, squeezed through a hole in the vineyard fence. It was a tragedy for the vines, and almost proved to be fatal for this tiny patch of the estate. They ravished the whole plot! But all was not lost. Three years later and the first crop of grapes to be delivered from these tough young vines are second to none. That’s the beauty of growing on ironstone and red clay.
Deeply coloured, as we all love our Barossa reds to be, the Atze’s take on this style is full of dark cherries and blackberries supported by a spine of fine, savoury tannins. Its richness and juicy-fruit is clearly Barossa but there’s more than a nod, in the savoury, food-friendly style to Italy.
It's a real crowd pleaser and it has a history of numerous awards to back up its world class pedigree.

Background/Story: |
The Mob Single vineyard. Very limited edition (only 200 dozen bottles). And, with a story to match its extravagance. The palate takes you on a journey of ripe, concentrated black fruits and harmonious spices, beautifully enveloped by savory tannins. "The Giant" Durif is complete and truly harmonious.

Maturation: Aged for 18 months in a blend of 3rd fill French/American oak and 20% new American Oak Hogsheads, this wine achieves a delightful softness while showcasing powerful upfront palate weight.
Single Vineyard: Our prized "The Giant" Durif comes from vines planted in 2005. Hand-pruned in a single cordon spur style, the vines produce high-grade fruit with a yield of 2.5 tonnes per acre.
Sub Regions: Sourced from the esteemed Koonunga subregion, where Brown Clay loam over deep red clay lends its unique influence.

Durif is one of Australia’s undiscovered gems. People in the know, we suspect, keep quiet about it so as not to arouse too much competition for what is, after all, a scarce bottle of wine. Atze’s Corner is one of the only wineries in the Barossa Valley to have planted Durif and based on this result more should follow. This is a fruit-driven Shiraz with all the ripe black fruit flavours we’ve come to expect from the Barossa Valley favourite. As with all Atze’s wines, this has been made using the traditional artisan approach - destemmed without crushing, delicately moved to the fermenter to keep the grapes intact, hand pumped over and basket pressed to create a pure and expressive wine. |

Cold soaked on skins to extract colour and extended skin contact after fermentation for a total of 16 days adds structure and weight to the palate. Gently pressed and allowed to undergo secondary fermentation in Oak barrels. |
